MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — The American Cancer Society is reminding people to not let the pandemic keep you from getting help.
The society says cancer patients have a high risk of infection from COVID-19 because their immune systems are often weakened by the disease and the treatments for it.
They also say people who suspect they have cancer symptoms may not get a screening because of the pandemic.
“If you have a symptom, you call your doctor or your health professional. You find out when you can be seen. Because you don’t want to wait. And lot of people right now are waiting. A lot of people are frankly afraid to go to the doctor’s office. Maybe it’s time to reconsider that,” said Dr. J. Leonard Lichtenfeld, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, American Cancer Society.
