Life is beautiful indeed, but sometimes, we are simply reminded that there are people that make our planet a place we would not like to live in anymore.
Poachers are ones of these, and the death of innocent animals they cause outrage the rest of the world. All other compassionate humans disapprove these deplorable actions and the horror poachers cause, feeling intense pain at seeing something so cruel.
About a year ago, Andrew Renner and his son Owen were wandering the harsh wilderness of Esther Island, Alaska, when they saw a bear hibernating with its cubs.
Since the sleeping mother did not confront them, they decided to wander up to its den and shoot it dead at point blank range, while the cubs wailed.
However, the entire event was captured on camera, as the bears participated in a study conducted by the US Forest Service and the Alaska Department of Fish & Game. The recording would take place when the bears emerged from their den, so motion sensors were set up, but the Renners ruined it all.
The Humane Society of the United States decided to share the video publicly in a bid to show a preview of the potential effects a law that allows cruel methods of hunting black bears and other carnivores on National Preserve lands god into effect could have on Alaska’s bears and other wildlife.
It is currently illegal to kill black bear mothers and cubs in their dens on the land in Alaska, but it seems that the proposed legislation by the Trump administration can overturn it all.
According to Kitty Block, president of Humane Society International and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, the video that shows the father and son killing the mother bear and the babies shows extreme disregard for their lives, and their ruthless brutality shows that the government is poised to enact into law on millions of acres in Alaska, overturning a 2015 Obama-era rule that bans the killing of black bear mothers and cubs in their dens on these lands.
It is completely contrary to the purpose of federal public lands such as national preserves and national wildlife refuges.
Even though it is too late to prevent the death of these bears, it is not too late to abandon the plants to enable such killing.
In August 2018, the father and son were charged with unlawfully taking a female bear with cubs, unlawfully taking bear cubs x2, possession/transporting illegally taken game x3.
Moreover, Andrew was additionally charged with tampering with physical evidence, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and unsworn falsification in the Second Degree.
Both of them pleaded guilty in January 2019, so they received a jail sentence and a $9,000 fine, their hunting privileges were temporarily lost, and personal property as also confiscated.
Yet, the entire scene is so heartbreaking, that it can be said that the punishment does not fit the crime. The cowardice these two men showed deserves a severe punishment, but at least we can hope that this case can raise awareness about the importance of animals and their protection from poachers.
